Finnie, oh, Finnie. What can I say about this darling little girl? Well... now when I hear people talk about colicky babies, I have some perspective. Starting at one day short of 2 weeks of age, this little princess blessed us with daily crying episodes. At the height, she couldn't be comforted for about 3 hours straight. The poor thing -- you could tell she was just in pain, and nothing, no position, no one person, no amount of milk could soothe her. We tried all sorts of things:
1) I cut out hard core milk and cucumbers and brocolli. (I can't let go of dairy all the way...)
2) releasing gas by shoving her knees up to her chest and holding it
3) A good friend suggested nursing her while she is sitting up. This keeps the air bubbles towards the top of her stomach and make it easier to release. This trick works wonders!
4) Milycon at every feeding
5) Grip Water every 4 hours from 2pm through the night.
6) Heatpad on her tummy
7) Colic hold. Pa Steve and Dad are the most effective with this because they have bigger hands.
At 7 weeks we found the perfect combination (yes, only took 5 weeks). She still had episodes at night, but as long as we got all the gas out of her, she fell asleep fairly quickly once we put her down to sleep.
Finnie's Fix:
1) Carry her in the Ergo often from 12noon until she goes down for the night. This keeps her upright and allows gas to escape.
2) Feed her sitting up. Burp her immediately. If the gas does not come up right away, put her down on her back, push her knees up to chest and hold for 3 seconds. Pick her up and burp her again -- this works like a charm! All of her burps come up.
3) Warm up a homemade rice hot pack for 35 seconds. Place princess on her stomach with the hot pack straddling her stomach. This soothes that terrible tummy and she drifts right off to sleep. ZZZZzzzzzzzzzzzzz.
